The North Crag is a towering wall seamed with long grooves and ramps which holds a selection of classic multi-pitch lines that are both steep and sustained. Unfortunately the left-hand side of the North Crag suffered a large rockfall in 2018 that wiped out some routes; those that remain have been reclimbed and the rock is mostly stable although care is still needed.

The South Crag is a far friendlier spot that gets lots of sun.

Approach notes

Park at Legburthwaite carpark (fee). Take the path opposite the toilets and over the road to a field. Walk up the field a short way to a track.

For the North Crag, walk left along the track to a gate and then up next to the fence to reach a water culvert. Cross the small bridge and head up to below the cliff.

For the South Crag, cross the track and take a well-defined path up the field and over a water culvert and wall to the base of the cliff.

Evening all!.. the forecast for Tuesday looks ok and so the castle rock south crag meet is on. The forecast is for showers in the morning and clearing up for the evening ????(the forecast for Thursday is similar but more showery). I am working in Keswick on Tuesday and so will give an update on the weather at about 2pm. If it is wet then we can always go to kong. Castle rock has a good range of low and mid range range climbs (and a few E’s) all of a good quality. There’s plenty of parking either at legburthwaite or slightly further away (but free) on the side of the A591. I’ll be leaving Keswick at around 3.30 if anyone needs a lift. See you there!! dan

The weather was playing with us for the castle rock meet!… after heavy rainfall all morning, it stopped (kind of) at about midday. Arriving at the crag for 4 pm it was clear even from the road that the crag was wet. I don’t mind admitting that kong was calling me but this wasn’t the case for Steve and Mark who were ‘keen’ to lead some of the severes and do what looked like the dry routes. About 10 minutes into the climbs and at a suitably committed height the rain returned! Neither of the leaders succumbed to natures message and continued and the rain abated.
While some of us still doubted the conditions Matt was having none of it and appealed to our national pride! Mike and Kath arrived and the climbing continued. Route after route was ticked off and for a while the sun even came out! The crag continued to dry and confidence continued to grow and in the fading light some of the harder routes were led. Then, just as we were packing up the heavy rain returned m. We made a hasty retreat to salutation which was closed so we went to The horse and farrier.
Thanks everyone for a great evening and for showing me that a little bit of perseverance can be worth it!
