The weather on Saturday was not similar to the warm, dry day promised by the met office, instead we were greeted by showers interspersed by drizzle. However being a hardy lot the group donned waterproofs and set off for spout force falls which were in excellent condition following the recent rainfall. There followed some aborted attempts at route finding before the meet leader elected to ascend a loose slippery and log infested slope to reach a forest track above. Once there, everyone composed themselves and proceeded onwards, and more gently upwards, towards the cloud covered ridge line, stopping at a convenient place for a snack prior to entering the gloom above. However once we got going again the weather gods took pity on us, the rain stopped, the clouds lifted and a gently drying breeze came out to play. The walk accross the ridge took in Broom fell and Lords Seat with good views out accross the Solway, to Skiddaw Grisedale Pike and down Borrowdale. As the route from Lords Seat to Barf requires navigation of a wide swamp (which was also in condition following the recent rains) the team opted to head into whinlatter forest and the delights of its hard forest trails. Pleasant forest roads took us back firstly to the whinlatter centre and then all the way to Hobcarton and the parked cars.
A lovely walk when the weather gods permit. Thanks to Judith, Cath P, Geraint, Mike K and David and Lorraine Welsh
