Five of us turned up with bikes at the Bowness Knott car park. The parking meter was working, so the more principled participants expressed their disapproval of Forestry England’s management of Ennerdale by parking down the road. We cycled to the Black Sail YHA hut and were disappointed and shocked to discover five or six cars parked there. One of the YHA party explained that they had been given a code to open the road gate, but she agreed with us that a major attraction of the Black Sail hut was that you could (until recently) only reach it by walking. The sky was grey, and on the plateau of Kirk Fell we were in mist, but there were moments when sunlight lit up patches of distant fellside. Fording the river by bike proved to be trivial, but we did not climb Tom Wren’s boulder for fear of descending the slightly damp rock. The participants were Ed, Geraint, Mick R, Jonathans C and T. Three of the party drank beer at the Fox and Hounds.
