The general forecast for Saturday is good, but very cold with freezing level potentially down to 400 metres. This may adversely affect the difficult exit from Old West and add unnecessary excitement to the complex descent. Therefore I propose to keep Old West for another day and am changing the meet to another excellent route but at much lower elevation.
Long Crag Buttress, Coniston Grade 1, 3 stars. – a very pleasant route on rough rock. Then continuing off-piste for a section to join a path through the old mine workings and the main track into the Red Dell. The quiet, upper reaches of Red Dell offer further scramble options at Grade 2 to the summit of Wetherlam, spectacular views of the Coniston Fells and a choice of return routes back to the village according to time and energy.
Long Crag Buttress is just above the start of the Coppermines Valley Road (private). There is limited free parking at the start of this road (before the private section), near the Ruskin Museum. There is a big Pay and Display car park in the village. Meet at the Pay and Display car park at 9.30.
Lift available from Cockermouth Business Park (aka the wigwams) at 8 a.m. Please let me know if you want to lift-share from there, either via WhatsApp or e-mail judithbrown3@aol.com.
Whilst it’s not necessary to confirm if you are coming, it is helpful if I know who to expect.
