This was a scramble meet in that it got a bit scrambled with last minute changes to transport and a deteriorating weather forecast. Nevertheless a few hardy souls/mad people set out into the murk from Seathwaite. The ghyll was in full spate, so we took an informal path alongside it, with the meet leader occasionally staring down wistfully into the torrent. Upon emerging below Seathwaite slabs, several party members upheld the honour of the club by actually scrambling up them, rather carefully due the damp. By then the forecast fog had arrived, so plan B (or rather C or D by this stage) was put into effect and we plodded through the mist to Base Brown and onto Green Gable through strong blasts of wind, which had not been forecast, not even by the ever pessimistic MWIS.
Having gained a summit, common sense got the better of us and we descended through thinning cloud until we eventually got a view of Styhead tarn and the trail back to Seathwaite. Feeling we had made the best of an unpromising job, we retired to the Borrowdale Hotel for light refreshments. As we all headed home, the skies cleared……
Thanks to Mark W, Anne B, Craig, Stuart K, Steve and Kath P, and new member Isla – I hope we haven’t put you off coming on another meet. Maybe Rabbit’s Trod will get done on a future meet when the crag is actually visible.
