An early start meant it was still rather overcast as we left Birks Bridge. Too busy chatting we missed the direct path up through the forest. There then ensued considerable quantities of navigation through swamp and bog. At one point we noticed that the ground we were standing on was actually floating. We made heroic attempts to fit the guidebook description to the overabundance of rocky outcrops. Then Brendan took over the navigation and with the help of the Harvey’s map and a compass we eventually located Brandy Crag. At least by then the cloud was lifting.

Although a little disjointed the route itself proved entertaining and enjoyable on excellent grippy rock, with lots of variations possible, leading directly to the dramatic, rocky tops of Harter Fell and splendid views. We descended by the path we should have used on the ascent and by the time we got back to Birks Bridge the sun was shining – in time for us to go home, typical!

The Famous Five were Ingrid, Andrew, Martin Attwood, Brendan and Judith.
