This Saturday’s Scramble is scheduled to be an ascent of Harter Fell from Eskdale. The weather forecast looks encouraging, but just before the cold snap the route was in a very poor condition: very wet and mossy. Kath and I are going out tomorrow to survey the route and will circulate final arrangements (route and meet location) on Thursday evening. But any alternative will also be in the Eskdale/Wasdale area with a 0930 start time. We’ll also have a firmer idea of the weather for Saturday by then too. So a further update with full details will appear on Thursday evening. Best Steve and Kath

Hi Everyone, Most of Saturday’s proposed scramble is very wet from extensive seepage. Saturday’s forecast is OK, but the local forecast for Friday is low cloud/mist/drizzle, so the scramble will not be in condition. Hence, we will meet at the Overbeck Car Park in Wasdale (NT, pay and display, w3w:regarding.withdraw.glass) for a 0930 start and climb Yewbarrow (some hand on rock required) and then traverse the ridge and descend to Dore Head (again a few moves of scrambling). Then, if time, we can ascend Red Pike, returning to the cars via the Overbeck valley. This route gives us a good chance of getting above the cloud if the predicted inversion occurs, and the opportunity for those needing time to don their tuxedos for the evening’s club dinner to depart promptly. Due to that constraint we intend to be back at the cars before 1500.
Do let us know if you are coming so we can wait for you. (s.d.price@ucl.ac.uk, 07713017740, or WhatsApp).

Well if there was an inversion, we didn’t reach it! Leaving Overbeck we climbed into cloud at about 400m and had a very foggy traverse of Yewbarrow. We had an enjoyable scramble down to Dore Head which was also under cloud and chilled by a stiff breeze. The lone walker following us clearly found the scramble less enjoyable. After a pause for refreshment, and given there appeared no chance of the cloud clearing, a vote (pretty much unanimous) dictated a walk back down the Overbeck valley, emerging from the cloud for hazy views of Wastwater and a return to the cars. Thanks to Ros, Ann S, Jonathan C, Mick, Chris (+Nelson) and Isla for very enjoyable walk. There are lovely views to come back for next time – honestly! Kath and Steve
