Grasmere to Stonethwaite via Jack’s Rake (Grade 1, 3 stars)
The forecast for Saturday in Grasmere is dry with a light S wind, so the meet is probably on, to be confirmed on Friday.
This walk-with-scramble is unusual in that it starts in one valley and ends in another. The start is timed for the southbound 555 bus that leaves Keswick at 08.30 and arrives at Grasmere Centre (not Grasmere Village Hall) at 08.58. (Or the northbound 555 bus arriving at 08.43). We will depart at 09.00 from the turning towards Allan Bank, outside Emma’s Dell (LA22 9SX; trooper, uptake, etchings) and follow a footpath which avoids most of the Easedale Road. Fork left up to Little Castle How and follow the winding path WNW until Pavey Ark comes into view, then traverse to reach Jack’s Rake. From the summit of Pavey Ark cross to a path over flattish moorland to High Raise, down to the ridge above Sergeant’s Crag and to the top of Heron Crag/Eagle Crag. Then either down steeply, or on an easy path back down to Greenup Gill.
Logistics. The Scafell Hotel is closed “until further notice” and the other hotel in Rosthwaite does not serve non-residents. The Langstrath Inn in Stonethwaite says its bar will be open. Buses to Keswick stop at Stonethwaite road end at 22 min past the hour, until 17.22.
Using buses. The fare is £2 per bus, paid by card or cash (except, of course, for mature citizens). The 555 destination is “Grasmere Centre”.
