Thursday 9th July 2026 marks the bicentenary of the first ascent of Pillar Rock. The lone climber was John Atkinson of Ennerdale and his ascent was later established to have been via what is nowadays called The Old West Route (Moderate), an easy enough, but long and very exposed way to the summit.
There will no doubt be quite a few climbers heading to Pillar on Thursday to mark the occasion, and probably even more on Saturday 11th.
The Memorial Footbridge over the Liza is still missing, rendering the approach from Buttermere slightly more problematical. However, Fibrus road signs on the Bowness Knott road claiming it will be closed on the 9th can, I am assured by Cumberland Council, be safely ignored.
