ModeratorThe next AC Lakes lecture is this Thursday 16th January when Tom Davis-Merry joins us to talk about his recent expedition to the Panmah Muztagh region of the Karakoram in Pakistan. Tom is an accomplished climber, skier, writer and speaker. He has been on exploratory expeditions in Central Asia, South America, and the Himalaya and his latest trip makes a great talk. Further details below.
On Thursday 13th February, Mick Fowler will be speaking about the first ascent of Yawash Sar, which he and Victor made in the autumn, nearly 40 years after their first ascent in Pakistan in 1987.
The final evening in the current Lakes lecture programme will be on Thursday 13th March, when we are hoping to have a varied selection of short talks by some of those who have attended the Club’s annual Saas Aspirants Summer Meet in the past.
Best wishes

AC Lakes Lecture OrganiserThursday, 16th January 2025 – Tom Davis-Merry: The Karakoram is Calling – Exploratory Mountaineering in the Panmah Muztagh.
In September 2024, a team of three young AC members ventured into a remote and little-explored corner of the Karakoram with their sights set on several unclimbed peaks on the Pakistan-China border. Forced to change objectives by near-impossible access to the glaciers, Tom and Felix Dowidar-Jackson instead made a first ascent of Pk5650 a little closer to their basecamp. Moving next to the Hunza valley, Tom and Leo Kesner then made the first British attempt of a peak close to 6000m in the Misgar valley. This is the story of their endeavours.
Venue: The Greta Suite of the Skiddaw Hotel, Main Street, Keswick, CA12 5BL
Doors Open: 7pm. Lectures Start: 7.30pm.
The lectures are free to AC Members. Non-members are welcome to attend for a suggested donation of £3-£5 to the Alpine Club Climbing Fund.

Thursday, 13th February 2025 – Mick Fowler: The Pioneering Pensioners
In the summer of 1987 Mick Fowler and Victor Saunders travelled together to Pakistan, where they made the first ascent of the ‘Golden Pillar’ of Spantik (7027m), a landmark mountaineering achievement. Nearly four decades later, they are still climbing together and still achieving first ascents in Pakistan. In 2024, they returned to the Karakoram and, over seven days, made the first ascent of Yawash Sar (6258m) – “the Matterhorn of the Khunjerab.”Thursday, 13th March 2025 – Details tbc
