Today’s scramble turned out to be a wee adventure – damp grade 1s in gullies give exceptionally good value in the adrenalin department! Excellent teamwork and some interesting ropework helped us over the ‘boulder bridge’ in lower Dungeon Ghyll – the exposure is very dramatic. Apparently, Wordsworth mentioned this feature in a poem, must have been feeling more relaxed than we were.
More ropework protected a bit of a climbing pitch. After that the meet leader got very confused and thought we were higher up than we were – also the continuation up the ghyll looked a bit too exciting – so some of us broke out and across the fellside to look for Thorn Crag – found something that sort of fit, climbed it, and then found the actual Thorn Crag – nice scrambling if a tad damp. Meanwhile the intrepid A team had continued up the correct finish and through the magic of mobile phone technology communicated with the rest of us they were heading up a scramble on Harrison Stickle. Eventually we reassembled at the col between our tops, except for Celia who used the feeble excuse of a bandaged wrist to opt out of clambering up steep, greasy rock and had – sensibly – gone for a nice walk and was already down at Stickle Tarn where Jon T headed to keep her company.
We were all reunited at the Stickle Barn where various beverages were imbibed. So, a satisfactory day out among some very dramatic scenery – worth revisiting on a hot sunny day! There was an excellent turn-out – Marks W and H, Celia, Anne (with E), Ann(without E), Steves P and D, Jonathans C and T, Brendan, Jamie and Judith.
