    Hello KMC

I hope you don’t mind me reaching out personally.

I’m getting in touch with a request to connect with your Club and to get involved with the BMC Lakes Area.

Fun fact – The Lakes was the very first Area committee formed by the BMC in 1945, shortly after its founding 80 years ago.

Not so fun fact – The current Chair, Secretary and Members’ Council Rep of the Lakes Area are all stepping down (having served numerous terms – between them they total around 240 years of age so it’s not as if they don’t deserve a rest!) This puts the Lakes Area in a perilous position, and despite the efforts of the existing committee members they haven’t been able to find people willing to take up the Chair or Secretary roles (though there is a candidate for the Members’ Council Rep).

It would obviously be a tragedy if the Lakes Area ceased to be represented as a BMC Area (maybe amalgamated with the North West?) and I am really keen to avoid this potential scenario – hence reaching out…

In an effort to re-kindle interest, I am working with the existing Lakes crew to raise the profile of the next Lakes Area Meeting on Friday – 17th January 2025. I am planning to attend personally and will be giving a slideshow on climbing El Cap, and also we are combining the event with a Climbers Against Cancer Housewarming party (as CAC moves into the Kendal Wall – I’m a CAC Truste too!) Hopefully this will create some interest and a platform to encourage more volunteers. See outline agenda below

Sportiva Room – Kendal Climbing Wall – 17th January 2025

6.00pm – Doors Open – Come along early for a chat or to bag some CAC New Year sale bargains, before they all go!
    6.30pm – 7.30pm BMC Lakes Area Meeting
DO WE WANT A LAKES AREA – Call to action for Area Volunteers – Chair / Sec / Area Rep (15mins)
Near Miss – Raven Crag, Great Langdale (30mins)
Report on bolting and Cumbria Bolt Fund (15mins)
    7.30pm – 8.00pm Overlap BMC Area / CAC ‘Housewarming Party’ – Social / chat / cake / raffle
    8.00pm – 9.30pm Slideshow
World Premier of CAC 10th Anniversary Film (15mins)
El Cap Capers – An ascent of North America Wall – Dominic Oughton (CAC Trustee / BMC President) (45mins)
    Q&A
I wonder if you and Club colleagues might be able to help, for example…

Publicize the Area vacancies and encourage Club members to apply
Publicize the event and encourage Club members to attend – (I will follow up with links to more polished publicity material / social media posts)
…and of course it would be marvelous if you were able to come along yourself – it would be great to meet in person!

The Lakes is such an iconic part of the tradition of British Climbing – the Lakes BMC Area is really too precious to be allowed to fail. All ideas and support welcome.

Wishing you a belated Merry Christmas and early Best Wishes for 2025!

    Cheers, Dom
