The next AC Lakes lecture is this Thursday, 28th November when Dave Wynne-Jones will be joining us to speak about expedition planning. Dave is an accomplished alpinist, ski mountaineer and expedition leader, having summited all the 4000m peaks in the Alps and led over 20 expeditions to remote mountains around the world. He was inspired to write his book, An Expedition Handbook, after finding it impossible to fully cover his experiences within the two-hour seminars he led at symposia hosted by Plas y Brenin.

It should be an informative evening, considering how best to organise an expedition to the greater ranges for those currently climbing; how things have changed, for those who have been in the past; and the realities of mountaineering in remote locations for anyone with an interest in adventurous exploration.

The following talk will be on Thursday 16th January when Tom Davis-Merry joins us to talk about putting expedition planning into practice. Tom is recently back from a trip to explore a remote part of the Karakorum with two others and the only information I have so far is that they clearly survived the experience, since Tom was at the Club’s AGM on Saturday!

On Thursday 13th February, Mick Fowler will be speaking about the first ascent of Yawash Sar, which he and Victor made a couple of months ago, nearly 40 years after their first ascent in Pakistan in 1987.

    More details below.

    Best wishes

Thursday 28th November – Dave Wynne-Jones: An Approach to Expeditions

Dave will talk about expedition organisation and relate some tales from his mountaineering adventures of how these principles were applied (or not) in his own expedition career. He will also address the difficulties of managing expeditions in the midst of a climate crisis.

Dave’s recent book ‘An Expedition Handbook’ will make a great companion to this talk.

Venue: The Greta Suite of the Skiddaw Hotel, Main Street, Keswick, CA12 5BL

Doors Open: 7pm. Lectures Start: 7.30pm.

The lectures are free to AC Members. Non-members are welcome to attend for a suggested donation of £3-£5 to the Alpine Club Climbing Fund.

    Future Lectures

Thursday, 16th January 2025 – Tom Davis-Merry: The Karakoram is Calling – Exploratory Mountaineering in the Panmah Muztagh.
In September 2024, a team of three young AC members visited a remote and little-explored corner of the Karakoram with their sights set on several unclimbed peaks on the Pakistan-China border. This is the story of their endeavours.

Thursday, 13th February 2025 – Mick Fowler: The Pioneering Pensioners
In the summer of 1987 Mick Fowler and Victor Saunders travelled together to Pakistan, where they made the first ascent of the ‘Golden Pillar’ of Spantik (7027m), a landmark mountaineering achievement. Nearly four decades later, they are still climbing together and still achieving first ascents in Pakistan. In 2024, they returned to the Karakoram and, over seven days, made the first ascent of Yawash Sar (6258m) – “the Matterhorn of the Khunjerab.”
