With autumn rapidly approaching, the next season of Alpine Club Lakes lectures begins later this month.

Thursday 26th September: I’m delighted that Leo Dickinson has agreed to give the first talk. I suspect all mountaineers know of Leo but few have heard him speak. This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the UK’s leading mountaineering cameramen and film makers share his filmed conversations with numerous mountaineering legends. Many will know of those who feature in Leo’s talk. It’s an extraordinary list, including Heckmaier & Harrer, Diemberger, Habeler, Scott, Willans and Hargreaves, and it will, I’m sure, be a fascinating evening. Full details below.

Thursday 24th October: David Hamilton will be joining us to speak about his ski-traverse of the Alps. As a professional mountaineer who has completed the 7 Summits twice (Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Vinson, Elbrus and Carstensz) with multiple ascents of some of them, it is worth noting that David considers that this is “Probably the world’s best ski expedition”.

Thursday 28th November: Dave Wynn-Jones will be introducing his book on planning expeditions, so it will be an informative evening for all those currently planning their own trips and those interested to know how to organise getting away from the crowds to ascend remote peaks.

Finally, for anyone who would like to hear Brian Hall speak about his recent book and climbing with Doug Scott, CAN have organised a talk at Rheged on 20th September, details at: https://rheged.com/event/brian-hall-high-risk-climbing-to-extinction/. This is part of a special CAN weekend event, details at: A Weekend with Community Action Nepal 2024 Tickets, Fri 20 Sep 2024 at 19:00 | Eventbrite

Any queries, do get in touch.

Thursday, 26th September: Leo Dickinson – Voices We Have Lost
Leo is a renowned cameraman, director and adventurer who has made well over 60 films, winning every major mountain and adventure film award. He specialises in mountain, ballooning, skydiving and underwater films.
During his mountaineering career, Leo has filmed climbs on a number of well-known mountains and interviewed many of the world’s most famous mountaineering personalities. Tonight is a rare opportunity to see some of these filmed conversations featuring such luminaries as: Anderl Heckmaier & Heinrich Harrer, who made the first ascent of the Eiger North Face in 1938; Ken Wilson on great hoaxes (Gogarth & Cerro Torre); Kurt Diemburger on Toni Egger; Cesare Maestri on Cerro Torre; Martin Boysen/Pete Crew/Don Whillans on bolting ethics on Cerro Torre; Greg Child’s eloquent stories; Edmund Hillary; Alison Hargreaves after she soloed Everest without Oxygen; Doug Scott on Whillans; Hannes Stahli a Swiss guide who went with Leo to Death Bivouac by helicopter to film Eric Jones making his solo ascent of the Eiger North Face; Peter Habeler, who with Reinhold Messner made the first ascent of Everest without additional oxygen; and Liz Hawley who kept the records of who did what or sometimes didn’t – in Nepal.

Thursday, 24th October: TransAlp Ski – David Hamilton

This is an account of a multi-year ski tour following the entire arc of the European Alps from Menton on the French Mediterranean coast to Vienna. The route through France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria follows the crest of Europe’s highest mountain chain, passing through regions popular in summer but deserted in winter. It was a journey of 102 stages completed over 129 days covering 2,113km with 115,058m ascent.

Thursday, 28th November: Dave Wynne-Jones – An Approach to Expeditions
Dave will talk about expedition organisation and relate some tales of how these principles were applied (or not) in his own expedition career. He will also address the difficulties of managing expeditions in the midst of a climate crisis.

Venue: The Greta Suite of the Skiddaw Hotel, Main Street, Keswick, CA12 5BL
Doors Open: 7pm. Lectures Start: 7.30pm.

The lectures are free to AC Members. Non-members are welcome to attend for a suggested donation of £3-£5 to the Montane Alpine Club Climbing Fund.
