Head End Quarry forms one of a series of small limestone quarries found in the Carboniferous Limestone which forms a ridge around the northern edge of the English Lake District.

The quarry has a south facing aspect and is about 30 feet high and 140 feet long. It is relatively quick to dry, has a series of single pitch routes which are suitable for novices.

Hi Everyone. I’m taking over as meet leader for next Tuesday’s meet at Headend Quarry near Ireby. It’s a very sociable crag with lots of single pitch trad routes to go at. I will be there from 4 but as I’m in Wigton already I won’t be able to offer any lifts from Keswick but I’m sure with the help of WhatsApp we will be able to arrange some lift shares. The weather is looking like it should be ok for Tuesday evening so hopefully see lots of you there. Jon Trotman

After a dubious start, weather wise, we had a good turn out and even some sun for at least ten minutes. The quarry was basically ticked off with almost every route being done at least once. Members were Harry Y, Bry, Dan, Cath, Kath, Carol, Mike W, Pete, Mark M, Steve H, Oli, Jonathan C and myself. A great evening with a lovely crowd finished off with a beer at the Greyhound. Pete wins the medal for the longest and toughest route,… getting to the pub afterwards, most of us were on our third by the time he turned up!
