Good selection of quality easier routes up to 40m long on several buttresses which link well together to give a good days climbing. Best routes are Mitre Buttress Direct(VD), Harrow Buttress(D), Slabs West(HS), Suaviter(S), Oxford and Cambridge Direct(MS), Dexter Wall(VS).
One and a half hour uphill walk from Gatesgarth Farm. Farmer charges £4 to park but there are other places nearby. Or walk from Buttermere, takes about 15

The forecast for Saturday is currently very good and seems stable. So, this Saturday’s meet (1-6-24) at Grey Crag in on. If there is a change in the weather, we will update you later in the week. Grey Crag has a good selection of quality routes up to 40m long on several buttresses which link well together to give a good day’s climbing across the grades. The approach is an “enjoyable” 90 min uphill walk from Gatesgarth Farm (GR:319463,514999; W3W:digits.scanty.changed).
Parking: Gatesgarth Farm has a reasonably sized pay and display car park and there are some lay-bys further up the road towards Honister. The parking is likely to fill up early. The 77C bus leaving Cockermouth at 0735 and Buttermere (where there is additional parking) at 0813 will get you to Gatesgarth before 0826.
Timing: The good weather on Saturday has been well advertised, and it is the final weekend of half-term, so it is likely to be busy. Hence, Kath and I plan to leave the car park at 0900, to arrive at the crag at about 1030.

On Saturday seven members braved both the hike up to Grey Crag (1h20!) and the aerial and aural assault from powered paragliders. The day started chilly and breezy at the crag base, but developed into a beautiful afternoon allowing some teams a leisurely lunch in the sun below the final buttress. Great to see both Andrew and Kath, who took part in the 2023 Skills Day, leading routes. Routes climbed: Harrow Buttress, Chockstone Ridge, Slabs Ordinary, Rib and Wall, Oxford and Cambridge Direct. Many thanks to Anne B, Mick, Andrew S, Steve B, Andy B for joining Steve and Kath for a memorable day out.
