This Saturday is the Dow Crag (check your pronunciation!) meet. At the moment, remarkably for 2024, the weather is looking ok and so the meet is on. We’ll keep an eye on the weather, and post if anything untoward looks like occurring. We will aim to leave the Walna Scar car park (above Coniston; w3w: scanty.braved.grades; SD 28883 97003) at 0930 for the 60+ minute walk in. We’ll aim for the stretcher box at the foot of the crag. The car park is pay and display (?£9) There are lots of good routes on the crag including a few great multi pitch D/VDiffs some good Severes including Murray’s Route and VS’s like Eliminate ‘A’ with lots more above and between. After snatching the last “spaces” in the car park (earlier meet time next year?) eleven of us “enjoyed” a sun-kissed walk up to a dry but windy Dow Crag. Later the sun disappeared for periods, it grew colder and there were drops of drizzle in the air. Despite the wind gusts, there were ascents of ‘C’ Ordinary, Murray’s Route (including one twilight ascent), Murray’s Direct and Eliminate A – plus the now annual inspection of Hopkinson’s Crack: now even mossier. Refreshments were taken at The Sun in Coniston. Thanks to Mike, Gee, Luke, Amy, Pete, Darran, Geraint, Sam, Jonathan C (etymologist) and Kath for a great day out.
