To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Keswick Mountaineering Club we are holding a barbeque on Saturday 17th August.

The day will comprise of a local walk followed by our BBQ at Curlbeck House, Greysouthern.

You are invited to join us the walk and/or the evening event.

During the day of the BBQ, and subject to sensible weather, we hope to do a bit of a walk (maybe 3 hours) but not too challenging (no scrambling, climbing, ropework, or 3000 footers). Likely candidates Lorton fells or Loweswater fells. We will set off after lunch at a time which ensures we can be back at Curlbeck House by about 5pm. If any one wishes to freshen up when they get back to Curlbeck a single bathroom/shower is available, bring your own towel!

The BBQ/Bier fest will start at 6pm, anyone who wishes to come for the evening without joining us on the walk should aim to arrive around this time

The KMC are providing all food – hog roast (bun, pork, stuffing apple sauce etc) together with some side salads.

We won’t be providing drinks. You will need to bring and adequate supply of your preferred tipple (including soft drinks for drivers)

There is limited outside seating so if it looks like a nice evening folding chairs etc would be useful if you bring them.

There is adequate parking on site, also anyone who wishes to camp in the grounds is welcome to do so.

We will provide detailed directions to Curlbeck House nearer the time. There are currently a number of road closures in operation supporting the pipeline project which should have gone by the BBQ day as this will make life a lot simpler than following the current convoluted route

Finally, there are currently about 25 people attending.

If you have not yet let us know there is still time. Please let us know if you by replying to this email before 7th August so we can make the food order.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible

Regards
Mark Ward

The barbeque, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the club, was a huge success. We started with an afternoon walk up Low Fell and Fellbarrow. There are lovely views from Low Fell over Loweswater and Crummock Water and the weather stayed dry (if a bit breezy).

Several of us then availed ourselves of a shower at Curlbeck House and a much needed cup of tea. The rest of the group arrived for a 6pm start for the BBQ and the weather remained dry to allow us to sit outside and enjoy the great views. The food was amazing and in vast quantities and it was great to get together with good friends from the club; but also meet other halves. The wind eventually drove everyone inside and it was great that Claire and Mark have such a lovely home and were able to fit us all in to sit, eat, chat and eventually enjoy a musical soirée/singsong from Bob on ukelele, Jon on violin and Geraint on harmonica. A brilliant evening was had by all.

As we were there to celebrate 20 years of the club, I think it is worth saying thank you all the club officials and meet organisers who keep the club going – but especially to Jim for all the work he has done for the club over the last 20 years. THANK YOU!

On behalf of everyone present at the BBQ can I extend a HUGE THANK YOU to Claire and Mark for hosting the event. It involved a lot more work than they were prepared to admit (we left them with lots of clearing up to do) and Claire had made the biggest and most delicious pavlovas that I had ever tasted.
