Hi Everyone, Most of Saturday’s proposed scramble is very wet from extensive seepage. Saturday’s forecast is OK, but the local forecast for Friday is low cloud/mist/drizzle, so the scramble will not be in condition. Hence, we will meet at the Overbeck Car Park in Wasdale (NT, pay and display, w3w:regarding.withdraw.glass) for a 0930 start and climb Yewbarrow (some hand on rock required) and then traverse the ridge and descend to Dore Head (again a few moves of scrambling). Then, if time, we can ascend Red Pike, returning to the cars via the Overbeck valley. This route gives us a good chance of getting above the cloud if the predicted inversion occurs, and the opportunity for those needing time to don their tuxedos for the evening’s club dinner to depart promptly. Due to that constraint we intend to be back at the cars before 1500.
Do let us know if you are coming so we can wait for you. (s.d.price@ucl.ac.uk, 07713017740, or WhatsApp).

Well, the weather forecast was accurate. But still, the West Cumbria arm of the KMC enjoyed (type II fun?) a murky and wet walk up the NW ridge of Harter Fell. Stopping in the lee of a boulder on the summit for a quick snack, we then continued NE across the very boggy ground below Horsehow Crags to reach the road at the top of Hardknott pass. Then back down to the cars, with a diversion for some to view the fort. If never dry, it was at least warm once out of the wind. Thanks to Ros, Geraint, Mick, Chris and Kath for their good humour and helping get the most out of a poor weather day. The hospitality of the Brook House Inn was much appreciated and it certainly was not a day for a scramble!

    Hello Everyone,
Since my last message, it’s been a very wet and murky four days in West Cumbria. The forecast for tomorrow is for persistent drizzle and cloud cover to low levels, with a stiff breeze; with more rain arriving late afternoon. Given last week’s evidence, the scramble will NOT be in climbable condition. However, Kath and I will leave from the parking on Sat at 0930 to walk the loop over Harter Fell to Hardknott. If anyone would like to join us, they would be most welcome. It’s likely to be very wet underfoot and I’m afraid I cannot promise extensive (or any!) views.

Sunshine, hail, driving rain, dry forest paths, fords, slippery stepping stones and wet hillsides; all were encountered on Saturday’s Duddon “amble”. We stuck to the planned route, with some attendees incorporating ad-hoc scrambling on the ascent of Harter Fell. The Duddon did not disappoint with expansive views (at times) and beautiful riverside woodland. Some members opted to get wet feet on the river crossings voluntarily, some involuntarily! The Newfield Inn’s chips and beer also did not disappoint. Thanks to Judith, Anne B, Jon T, Jonathan C, Johnny, Tina H, Mick R, Geraint, Kath and Steve P. 8 miles, 5 hours, 720 m ascent.

The weather does not look too bad for tomorrow, so the Autumn Amble is on. 0930 start Birks Bridge Car park, as previously advertised. There is likely to be a cold wind on the top of Harter Fell, with a chance of wintry showers, so come prepared. Getting windier and cooler through the day – again with a chance of brief showers – but by then we’ll be down in the Duddon Valley.

    See you Saturday,
