The Birthplace of British Rock Climbing. This excellent crag, although rather broken, provides climbing of all grades in superb surroundings with its spendid ridges and steep walls over looking the upper Wasdale Valley and the Scafell Range.

The Napes is quite unique with its classic ridge climbs and the famous pinnacle of Napes Needle. Its relatively easy access and fine climbs has resulted in this being a popular stomping ground for the lower grade climber and beginner, but also provides some high quality testpieces. The majority of the crag is fast drying and holds the sun late into the day.

Saturday’s Meet (2 Aug) is at The Napes in Wasdale. This historic crag, although rather broken, provides climbing of all grades in superb surroundings. The crag has been under the cloud for much of this week, and showers are forecast for Thursday and Friday, but the forecast for Saturday is good – so hopefully the rock will be dry, so the meet is on. The plan is to leave the parking at The Green at Wasdale Head at 0900 (to try and beat the crowds) and meet anyone coming up from Borrowdale at the Stretcher Box at Sty Head at 1015. Please let us know (WhatsApp, 07713017740, s.d.price@ucl.ac.uk) if you are coming (and from which direction!) so we know who to look out for. Best, Steve and Kath

Saturday’s road closures (and two start locations) lead to the group of KMC climbers reaching a busy Napes area as a strung-out field rather than a compact peloton. Nonetheless, and not helped by the Meet Leaders’ lack of mobile phone reception, teams were formed and numerous ascents made on the lovely sunny day that emerged as the early cloud lifted. Needless to say, we were not the only people at the crag; at least 17 people being in view at one point. Climbs completed, with some multiple ascents, across several crags, include: Innominate Crack, Tophet Wall, Abbey Buttress, Arrowhead Ridge Direct, Eagle’s Nest Ordinary, Needle Ridge, Sphinx Ridge (up and down), Pinnacle Ridge Thanks to Mark M, Mark W, Jon T, Judith, Cath S, Sophie, Andy B, Charlie, Alastair, Ann S, Ros, Geraint – each of whom we saw, at least briefly! Steve and Kath.
