Either: Wistow Crags, Pillar – a three star route which goes at either grade 2 or 3

Or: Red Pike from Black Beck – a two star grade 2

Choice will depend upon how dry the crags are. Both are long, mountaineering-type scrambles in a fine mountain setting.

Both are approached from Wasdale Head via Mosedale.

I am monitoring the weather on this one. My thought was to go for:
Red Pike from Black Beck, 2*,grade 2, and one of the longest mountaineering scrambles in the Lakes. However, I have not done it, the Evans guide says the rock is treacherous when wet and there is heavy rain forecast for Thursday.

My alternative idea is Wistow Crags, 3* grade 2 or 3, which I did about 20 years ago and is also a good long mountaineering route – it has the advantage of being south facing, so probably quicker drying.

The forecast for Saturday is OK at the moment, cool but dry.

Both routes start from Mosedale, accessible via the packhorse bridge behind the Wasdale Head pub. Meet in front of the pub at 9.30. As usual car share will be available from the Lakeland Business Park in Cockermouth, leaving at 8a.m. If interested please e-mail me at judithbrown3@aol.com.

Assume the meet is ON, but I will e-mail if forecast deteriorates.

The sun shone, the wind barely blew, the rock was dry, the route pleasant. Apart from the steep slog up to bottom of Wistow Crags, everything about the day was enjoyable, from the scramble to the walk over the tops over Pillar to Steeple, and to the much-needed pint in the Wasdale Head Inn afterwards.

Great route, great weather, great ‘craic’. Thanks to the whole team for a fun day out – we were: Steve D, Ian ‘Longshanks’, Anne, Mark W, Joseph (on his first KMC meet) and prospective member, Jane. Plus yours truly who is claiming all the kudos for booking the sunshine.
