Crag features

Robin Proctor Scar, or as it was formerly known Norber Scar, has been redeveloped as a sport crag. In the past it was home to a handful of very serious mid-grade trad routes. The whole crag has been extensively cleaned and bolted, however the nature of the rock is such that much care is needed to climb here safely. The better routes at Robin Proctor’s Scar are as good as most at the grade in the local area and a few are worth travelling further for. The view from the crag is one of the best in the Dales and the quick drying nature of the rock and sunny aspect should ensure the Scar’s popularity.

As with other local crags there loose rock around. Sometimes this is hidden from view so the wearing of  helmets is encouraged.

Approach notes

From the A65, take the turn-off for Clapham (between Settle and Ingleton). Head into the village and at its centre park at the information centre. Walk up the lane until a footpath on the right leads through a tunnel. Walk along the track for about 1km until a footpath sign to Norber is reached. The crag is very obvious from here. Walk across the field and up the short scree slope.

    Robin Proctor’s Scar, Clapham – 19th July
Saturday’s meet is at Robin Proctor’s Scar at Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales. The limestone crag has been redeveloped as a sport crag and extensively cleaned and bolted. With climbs in the range of grades from 5a to 7a, many around 6a, it lends itself to a group meet. There’s some cracking routes and being newly developed it’s not polished. The view from the crag is one of the best in the Dales and the rock is quick drying with a sunny aspect. For those that don’t wish to climb, there are great walks in the same area.
There is a pay and display car park in Clapham https://maps.app.goo.gl/x3A6guxwuLNJuVrs5
From there, a straightforward walk of a couple of Km leads to the crag.
The pub will be The Old Manor House Bar by the car park.
At the moment, the forecast for the weekend is Thundery Showers. I’ll keep an eye on this through the week and make a call on Friday morning.

For those avidly watching the weather forecasts, it will come as no surprise that I have decided to CANCEL Saturday’s meet at Robin Proctor’s Scar and downpours and thunderstorms are forecast.
