Long routes of all grades on superb rock in a fantastic position. One of the best crags in the Lakes. Classics – Gimmer Chimney(VD), Bracket and Slab(MVS), A,B,C and D Routes(S), Oliversons(VD), Spring Bank(E2), Whits End Direct(E1), F Route(VS), Eastern Hammer(E3), Equus(E2), Kipling Groove(HVS), Ash Tree Slabs(VD), Intern(E1), NW Arete(VS), Asterisk(MVS), Gimmer String(E1), The Crack(VS), Dight(E1), Grand Finale(E1).

There are three main approaches;
From Stickle Barn NT car park take the main Dungeon Ghyll from the North end of the car park. Cross the gill after 500m and then continue for another 1km until you emerge on to an open plateau. Head west and when the path starts to rise again take a faint left track at a large cairn, the crag comes into view.
From the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel take the path towards Raven crag as far as the gate in the new fence. Turn left & follow a slight track below the fence to a stile then zig zag up the scree. Continue in the same direction for 50m until a better defined path leads right then back left across an area of terraces. Continue diagonally left wards, into a ravine. Beyond this either head horizontally to the NW Face or upwards to the SE Face.
Alternatively follow Mickleden until you are below the crag, then head gruellingly upwards.

    Good Morning all,
    Its time for our annual visit to Gimmer crag in Langdale, the weather forecast for Saturday is very good, even perhaps a little warm . The crag is large and very atmospheric offering a good range of grades from VD through to E grades on clean grippy rock offering something for everyone

    I will be leaving Cockermouth at 08:30 on Saturday, happy to lift share, aiming to be at the New Dungeon Gill National Trust Car Park by 09:30. (car park AKA the Stickle barn Car park and now perhaps the Lanty Slees Car Park)

    If you wish to lift share from the lakes Business park in Cockermouth please let me know either by email to markward1962@gmail.com or reply to WhatsApp 07500155064. If you plan to meet me at the Car Park to walk in also let me know so that I know to wait for you

    Look forward to seeing you Saturday
    Cheers
    Mark

    Well the day dawned warm and sunny, just as the nice weatherman had foretold, 5 KMC members made their way to Langdale with A/C on max. Arrriving at the Lanty Slees car park bags were carefully packed to minimse weight and the team set off prompt at 09:30 with Gimmer crag in thier sights. As we passed the toilet block the first perspiration rolled down the face but we soldiered on making the firts stream crossing in good time, golly it was hot. Onwards and upwards the group went passing many a walker resting and fanning themselves by the path to the second stream crossing, did I mention it was hot. Now for the steep bit, as the altimeter ticked over so the pace faded and individuals were forced to question why on earth we do this stuff, phew it was hot, fortunately the ridge line offered respite from the gradient and a light breeze cooled us all before the onset of heat exaustion. The remaining approach was signifactly easier and, after changing into dry clothes climbing commenced with assents of Ash Tree Corner, Ash tree slabs and F route, the latter two and the abseils back to the bags had to be completed in rain…. so much for dry clothes. The return to Langdale was thankfully downhill but the sun came out to thoroughly warm the members on thier return to the Car Park. As we had already been wet, then dry, then wet and dried out a little we finished the day with a wet (but isotonic) ale from the Lanty Slees. Thanks to Mark M, Stuart K, Judith and Ros for joining me, as always at Gimmer the climbing was good even if the weather could have been alittle more amenable. Did I mention it was warm

    Cheers
